Mayor & Council authorize life insurance benefits for members of Palmyra Fire Department

In efforts to recognize the dedicated, often dangerous service of our volunteer fire fighters, and in the aftermath of the sad passing of beloved Palmyra Fire Fighter Robert Smith, Mayor Scheffler and the members of Borough Council authorized the purchase of life insurance policies for members of the Palmyra Fire Department.

Following is resolution 2015-90, adopted Monday evening, April 20th.

BOROUGH OF PALMYRA RESOLUTON 2015-90

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE PURCHASE OF LIFE INSURANCE FOR QUALIFIED VOLUNTEER MEMBERS OF THE PALMYRA FIRE DEPARTMENT

WHEREAS, the Governing Body of the Borough of Palmyra previously adopted Ordinance 2001-20 creating a Length of Service Awards Program (“LOSAP”) to reward Members of the Palmyra Fire Department for the loyal, diligent and devoted services to the residents of Palmyra (codified in Chapter 21, Article II of the Code of the Borough of Palmyra); and

WHEREAS, to further reward Members of the Palmyra Fire Department, the Governing Body of the Borough of Palmyra also previously adopted Ordinance 2013-08, which amended Ordinance 2001-20 to provide for an automatic annual increase in LOSAP contributions equivalent to the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index pursuant to N.J.S.A 40A:14-185(f); and

WHEREAS, the Governing Body now also wishes to provide annually life insurance policies to qualified volunteer Members of the Palmyra Fire Department in recognition of their dedicated, often dangerous commitment to the community; and

WHEREAS, life insurance can also serve to retain existing Members of the Palmyra Fire Department and provide incentive when recruiting new Members; and

WHEREAS, the Governing Body authorizes annual life insurance coverage for current LOSAP-eligible Members of the Palmyra Fire Department as approved by Resolution authorizing prior year awards, as well as for all Life Members of the Palmyra Fire Department; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that effective July 1, 2015 the Governing Body of the Borough of Palmyra will provide Life Insurance benefits, including Accidental Death and Dismemberment, to qualified Members of the Palmyra Fire Department in the coverage and/or benefit amount of $30,000 each as proposed by United Healthcare through Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company per attached benefit summary.
